Lieutenant General Muhammad Asim Malik has been appointed as the new Director General of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), according to state-run PTV News. He will officially take charge on September 30, replacing Lieutenant General Nadeem Anjum, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) confirmed on Monday.

General Asim Malik’s promotion to DG ISI marks a key shift in leadership at Pakistan’s premier intelligence agency. Lt General Malik, who was promoted to the rank of lieutenant general and appointed as the army’s adjutant general in 2021, brings with him extensive experience in military operations and intelligence. He is a graduate of the prestigious Fort Leavenworth in the United States and the Royal College of Defence Studies in London.
The ISPR noted that General Malik has held significant commands during his career, including serving with the Balochistan infantry division and commanding the infantry brigade in Waziristan, a region crucial to counter-insurgency operations. His diverse roles across Pakistan’s military structure have prepared him for the strategic demands of leading the ISI.
The new ISI chief has been recognized for his outstanding performance throughout his military career. Notably, he was awarded an “honorary sword” in his course, signifying his exceptional leadership and tactical skills.
General Malik’s appointment signals continuity in the leadership of Pakistan’s intelligence community as the country navigates complex regional and global challenges.
